Soft-sealed gate valves refer to gate valves whose valve seats are made of elastic materials (soft seals) such as rubber and plastic and are sealed by fitting with the gate. They have the characteristics of excellent sealing performance, low fluid resistance, and low operating torque. They are widely used in water supply and drainage, food, chemical industry and other scenes with high requirements for sealing precision.
Structural composition

Material: ductile iron (QT450), carbon steel (WCB), stainless steel (304/316), etc., and the surface is often treated with anti-corrosion (such as epoxy resin coating);
Structure: Bolted connection or welding structure is mostly adopted, and the valve body flow channel is straight-through to reduce pressure loss.
Gate and valve stem
Gate: solid or hollow structure, with soft sealing layer (such as EPDM, NBR) on the surface, or directly fitted with the soft sealing surface of the valve seat;
Valve stem: stainless steel (304/316), divided into two types: dark stem (NRS) and open stem (OS&Y), the dark stem has a compact structure, and the open stem is convenient for observing the opening.
Soft sealing system
Valve seat seal: Common materials include EPDM, NBR, PTFE, etc., which are heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant;
Sealing principle: The valve stem drives the gate downward, and the soft seal is squeezed and deformed to fill the microscopic gap between the gate and the valve seat, achieving "zero leakage" sealing.
Excellent sealing performance: The elastic deformation of the soft seal compensates for the processing error and can achieve the "bubble-level seal" (zero leakage) in the API 598 standard.
Low fluid resistance: The flow channel is straight when the gate is fully open, and the resistance coefficient (Cv value) is close to the pipeline, which is suitable for large flow scenarios.
Low operating torque: The friction coefficient of the soft sealing surface is small (0.1-0.3), manual operation is labor-saving, and the power requirement of electric/pneumatic drive is low.
Corrosion resistance and hygiene: The sealing material can be selected from food-grade silicone, PTFE, etc., which is suitable for clean media such as drinking water, food and medicine.
Temperature and pressure limits: The temperature resistance of soft seals is usually ≤200ºC (PTFE can reach 260ºC), and the pressure is ≤PN40 (4.0MPa), which is not suitable for high temperature and high pressure conditions.
A gate valve operates by using a flat gate or disc to control the flow of fluids within a pipeline. Here's a step-by-step explanation of how it works:
Valve Closed Position: In the closed position, the flat gate rests perpendicular to the flow of the fluid, effectively blocking the passage of the fluid through the valve. The gate is held in place by the valve body and is in contact with the valve seats on either side to provide a tight seal.
Valve Opening: To open the valve, an operator or automated system applies force to the gate, moving it along its path of travel away from the valve seats. As the gate moves, the fluid is allowed to flow through the valve, following the open pathway created by the gate.
Fluid Flow: With the gate in the open position, fluid flows freely through the valve with minimal obstruction. The full bore design of many flat gate valves ensures that the internal diameter of the valve matches that of the pipeline, minimizing pressure drop and maximizing flow capacity.
Valve Closing: To close the valve, the gate is moved back into its perpendicular position, effectively blocking the flow of fluid through the valve. The gate returns to its closed position by the force of gravity or through the use of external mechanisms such as actuators or hand-operated mechanisms.
Soft seal gate valve is suitable for natural gas, petroleum, chemical, environmental protection, urban pipeline, gas pipeline and other transportation pipelines, venting systems and storage devices, as opening and closing equipment. Z43 type single gate flat gate valve with diversion hole is suitable for the long-distance pipelines for the exploitation and purification of natural gas.
